It didn’t take long for the sportsbooks to put up the betting lines for the December 19th showdown between welterweights Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev.
Immediately after UFC president Dana White announced the booking, oddsmakers quickly priced the fighters for the main event of the UFC’s December 19th event. When the lines opened, Edwards opened as a -175 odds-on-favorite while Chimaev came back as a +150 underdog. But that didn’t last long.
As soon as bettors found out that the lines had been posted, betting money poured in and not surprisingly, the red-hot Chimaev got the lion’s share of the money coming in. So now, the odds have flipped and as of the latest odds board from SportsBetting.ag as of 10/27/20, Chimaev is now a -150 betting favorite while Edwards is listed as a +130 underdog.
Has Not Fought in Over a Year
Edwards, the UFC’s no. 3 ranked welterweight, finally accepted a fight with Chimaev after the UFC threatened to remove him from the rankings due to inactivity. Edwards has not fought since defeating Rafael Dos Anjos in July 2019.

He turned down a March fight against Tyron Woodley due to health related reasons and also refused a title shot against Kamaru Usman because he couldn’t have a full camp. But after the UFC removed his name from the rankings earlier this week, the Briton finally came to his senses.
The former BAMMA welterweight champion has won eight consecutive bouts and has not tasted defeat since 2015 when he dropped a decision to Usman. Edwards has zoomed to the top of the rankings after consecutive wins over Donald Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson, and Dos Anjos. However, he has not fought in over a year.
Dying to Get Booked
Meanwhile, Chimaev has been calling out the entire UFC roster, almost begging for a fight and dying to get booked. But because of his high-risk, low-reward nature, everyone shunned him. The Russian prospect has been busy since joining the UFC. He has fought thrice this year and is looking to add at least one more bout to his resume before the year is over.

Chimaev joined the UFC earlier this year and during the first Fight Island series, he fought two bouts in different weight classes during a 10-day period. That feat set a record for the shortest turnaround between UFC wins in the modern era. Borz was supposed to be double-booked again last September. But after knocking out Gerald Meerschaert last month, his rumored bout against Demian Maia never reached fruition.
So he took his act to social media, called out fighters from middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, Stephen Thomson, and even Nate Diaz. No one answered his call until the UFC wiped out Edwards’ name from the rankings. Now Khamzat gets another opportunity to “smesh”.
First Real Test
It’s been one hell of a run for Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC. His first bout was at middleweight, then he fought at welterweight 10 days later. Less than two months later, he returned as a middleweight and won his third straight bout via stoppage. Now he moves down back to welterweight to face the first real test of his UFC career. Chimaev wanted a ranked opponent, Dana White gave him the 3rd best welterweight in the promotion.

Edwards has not lost since 2015 and has won eight straight bouts with his last three wins against quality welterweights. Rocky is an accomplished welterweight whose well-rounded skillset has proved to be frustrating even for seasoned opponents. It will be interesting to see if Chimaev can run over Edwards like he did his previous foes.
However, Edwards has not fought in 15 months and ring rust could be an issue in this fight, especially since he’s fighting an opponent who has fought three times already in this pandemic-hit year. It will be interesting to see how the betting lines settle down as we get closer to fight night.
